How do i become a resident in Italy? EU Citiziens Applying for residency should be quite simple providing you have correct and valid documents. You simply need to go to your local comune with your Valid Passport, Valid Carta / Permesso Soggiorno, Driving License and proof of your address (If you do not have a valid Carta / Permesso soggiorno then you will be unable to apply for residency) The procedure varies from Province to Province but generally someone (usually polizia) will visit your address a week or two after you have applied to prove that you live there. Once they have done this you can then collect your certificate of residence. Non EU Citizens You should contact the Italian Embassy in your home country. There are many different rules and regulations to publish in this page for different nationalities. For general advice use the forums to see if there are any members from your home country who have been through the process. You will need a permesso soggiorno before you can apply for residency.
My husband and I are Irish and owna house in Italy. We're here until mid August this year and plan to return every year for extended periods. We wish to apply for residency. We are based in the Massa Carrera province and he was down in the local comune this morning with our European Health Insurance Cards, Proof of Irish health insurance specially purchased for extended periods abroad (VHI Global) and bank statements showing proof of funds etc. They refused the global health insurance and dismissed the EHI cards. We seem to have been todl we cannot apply unless we have Italian Private Health insurance. We wish to insure our car here (Irish insurance company will not insure beyond end March) and we wish to start our 4 year old son in school. We are under teh impression that we need residency for both these things. Would you know if this is true and if there is anything else we should try in the local comune?
Re: How do i become a resident in Italy? My wife, 3 children and I moved here in 2003. We have the old Permessi. When we originally arrived we were asked for the children's birth certifcates to be translated into Italian with an Apostille, instead we did an 'auto-certificazione', the children went to school immediately and all was fine. 5+ years on the Comune wish to give us permanent residence. All we have to do is provide proof of income for the last 5 years (which we have done), a Francobollo (stamp) of Eur 14.62 and Apostille for the children's birth certificates. The British Consul say the Comune is within their right to ask and the Embassy will do this for a mere Eur 23 a go, but we but know there is a difference from "within their right" and "must". Friends in other local Comune have not been asked. There is no co-ordinated policy and the Comune have done the same Google searches we have to find a solution. Does anyone have any suggestions please ?
You will need to be residents for your son to enter the Italian schooling system, however as far as I am aware you do not need to be to insure your car. Residency is worth having in any case and once you have it then it can open up many more doors for you.
